Despite the efforts of the Vermont General Assembly to promote affordability, sustainability, accessibility and equity in the health care system since 2014, we continue to struggle to achieve our goals of universality. The purpose of Act 48 was to "provide, as a public good, affordable, high-quality, publicly financed health care coverage for all Vermont residents... regardless of income, assets, health status, or availability of other health coverage." This promise to the people has yet to be fulfilled.
Universal health care in Canada was achieved through the work of organized labor in the province of Saskatchewan. The Canadian system provides positive, efficient, and equitable care to citizens nationwide. At the fourth meeting of the Universal Health Care Caucus, we shall consider the story of the Canadian healthcare system and explore ways to learn from their successes and challenges.
Please join the Universal Health Care Caucus for our fourth meeting on Wednesday, April 24th, 2024. Attendance is possible both in person at the State House Cafeteria in Montpelier and through Zoom. From 5:00 to 5:30 PM, we will gather for refreshments and socialization in person, and the hybrid meeting runs from 5:30 to 7:00 PM.
