Plant ID Walking Workshop

Past event
Aug 26, 2023, 9 AM to 12 PM

Have you ever been out walking and wondered, what is the name of this plant? What characteristics should I take note of? Where would more of them grow?

Join us on Saturday August 26th from 9am-12pm for a Plant ID Walking Workshop! This will be an outdoor hands-on workshop located at the Lewis Deane Nature Preserve in Poultney, VT. The workshop will be led by Botanist, Jim Graves and Nursery Manager, Sadie Brown focusing on the basics of plant identification and local ecology, with the goal of highlighting the many native plants right in our backyard!

During the workshop you will be led through basic botany terms and concepts and have the chance to apply your new skills as we walk through the Preserve. You will learn about key characteristics of different species (plant parts, leaf shape and arrangements, flower and/or fruit types etc.) and the natural communities they are a part of.
In addition to the in-person education, the workshop will give guidance for further training, online resources, and introduce participants to regional field guides to be explored on their own.

All ages are welcome and no prior experience with plant identification is necessary!

Participants should be prepared for outdoor activities including light hiking. Please bring rain gear, sunscreen, bug spray, etc. as appropriate. This workshop will take place rain or shine!

Please contact Sadie Brown, sadie@pmnrcd.org, if you are interested or have any questions.

Parking for the Lewis Deane Nature Preserve is located at 934 Endless Brook Rd, Poultney, VT 05764. Parking is limited. Please be respectful of the surrounding property.
This event is hosted by the Poultney Mettowee Natural Resources Conservation District through the Champlain Valley Native Plant Restoration Nursery. Funding for this project was provided by the Lake Champlain Basin Program through the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission.
