The Play Every Town: 252 free concerts in each of Vermont's 252 towns is meant to build awareness and to confront climate change through the power of community and music. With this project David will become the first musician to perform in every Vermont municipality. He is traveling in his solar-charged electric vehicle throughout the state, offering free concerts to bring attention to the interrelated issues of climate and community, and to call into question the normality of long-distance touring and travel, while bringing the joy of music to his audiences.
Feurzeig, a professor of music at UVM, specializes in genre-defying recitals that bring together music of an astonishing ous commentary, create eye- and ear-opening programs that will change how you hear all kinds of music.
Each program is locally tailored.
The Rupert concert includes Mozart's earliest compositions dating from 1761, the year the town was founded, and his Rondo in D major K. 485 from 1786, the year the Congregational Church (the oldest operating church meetinghouse in Vermont in continuous service) was built. For 3 years, the young Vermont Republic had its own coinage, the "Vermont Coppers", minted in Rupert; to mark this distinction the program will include a rendition of "Pennies From Heaven". Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag" will honor the Maple News, the periodical of Vermont's sugaring industry, published in Rupert.
The local and talented organist Jeff Linebeck will join David for Natalie Sleeth's "Hymn of Promise", the favorite hymn of the late lamented Rupert Congregational organist Kevin Bishop, who originally invited David to play here. Like every concert in the project, this one will include its own unique sonata by Domenico Scarlatti: Sonata no. 75 for this seventy-fifth concert in the project. Other solo pieces will round out the program.
Admission is free, with voluntary donations going to the church's community warming fund which helps keep local residents of the Rupert Community warm in many ways! The warming fund has helped us pay for vital repairs and energy upgrades for our neighbors, as well as electric or fuel bills, purchases of wood or wood pellets and food to keep bellies warm too! We recognize that those living at or below the poverty line are often hit the hardest or first by climate change issues. Your donations are appreciated and help our friends and neighbors.
