Restoration of the Pine Street Barge Canal moves into a new phase of community earthworks this week.

Friends of the Barge Canal began with our May 7 GreenUp Day event when 140 volunteers gathered to clear out decades of trash. We have continued the work of taking care of the Barge Canal by conducting a bimonthly species Inventory of plants and animals (ongoing every 2nd and 4th Sunday 3:00-5:00 pm). We've identified nearly 100 species so far. Join us!

On Thursday, July 28 we will be moving into the work of supporting native plant presence, pollinator habitat, and food web resilience. We will be working with Mike Bald of Got Weeds on mechanical methods (= no herbicides) for nonnative species removal. This method is a 3-year long process that relies on community participation and commitment. Join us for a morning of work and, in the process, learning how you can help heal this damaged, wild land in the heart of the South End. Care of a small parcel of land = care for Earth.

Learn basic safety protocols and identification skills as a community project grounded in caring for the land. We will be working on city-owned public land.

Bring work gloves (we have plenty to use if you don't have some) water, snacks, and sun & tick protection. Wear sturdy boots, long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, safety glasses (if you have some, we'll have a good supply). Tools will be provided but feel free to bring your own clippers and loppers if you have them.

Thursday July 28, 2022, 8:30 am- 12:30 pm

We'll meet across from Dealer.Com, Pine Street, Burlington, VT
