I've been persuaded to teach a 5-string banjo course this spring for The Summit School of Traditional Music and Dance in Montpelier -- founded by Cabot's own Katie Trautz. I'll be teaching the elements of playing -- all styles of picking -- and the molecules of banjo set-up and maintenance -- PLUS -- the history and cultural significance of this most American (and, not incidentally, most African) of musical instruments. BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE! How to teach yourself! How to read tablature! How to play along at a session when you haven't a clue what's going on! How to tell the difference between Old-Timey and Bluegrass! This eight-week course begins Thursday, March 20 at 46 Barre Street in Montpelier, and further information can be found at http://summitschool.wix.com/summitschool. Bring a banjo -- it will be helpful. Or you can come for the cultural stuff and just play air banjo.
