I encourage everyone who can to see this latest documentary achievement by Bess O'Brien. As always, she takes you to the heart of the complex issues faced by the unhoused as well as the hearts of the people who are experiencing it. One can't help coming away with profound empathy—not sympathy—for the plight of our fellow Vermonters; they are us with a different twist of fate. Bess turns her lens to central Vermont throughout the film, and I was able to recognize both providers and unhoused subjects whom I and my staff at Turning Point have encountered. "Just Getting By" captures important truths about a usually invisible—but very real—part of our community.
