About

Nestled in the hill town of North Shrewsbury, Pierce's Store first opened as a General Store in 1865. The Pierce family ran the store for over a century, eventually bequeathing it to the Preservation Trust of Vermont. Reborn as The Shrewsbury Cooperative at Pierce's Store, it offers freshly baked goods, grab-and-go sandwiches, local produce and handcrafted goods made by local artisans. Events include wine and beer tastings, the Blueberry Festival, and fiercely contested Chili Cookoffs.

The third Thursday in November is a time of celebration in France, marking the end of the harvest season with fireworks, music, and wine tastings. And by releasing the latest Beaujolais Nouveau, a fresh, very drinkable wine which just happens to pair well with the Thanksgiving turkey feast.

Pierce's Store will be celebrating Beaujolais Nouveau Day a little early, this Friday November 15th from 4pm to 6pm. A jazz quartet will be jamming in Pierce's Garage and Emmett Sirjane will be making personal pizzas with his hand crafted portable pizza oven. Wine and beer will be available by the glass.

The wine tasting will be Pierce's Store, where we will offer advance tastings of this year's Beaujolais Nouveau (don't tell the French we are doing it early!). We'll also feature other wines that complement the Thanksgiving table: a festive sparkler from Veneto (like a prosecco but with gentler fizz), a classy Grüner Veltliner from Austria, a Paso Robles rosé, and a highly rated North Coast blend (Merlot, Zin, Petite Sirah). We snagged all on sale so they are good value as well as being tasty.

So come help us salute the end of harvest season. Vive le vin!

Pierce's Store in North Shrewsbury will be celebrating the advent of fall with wine, music and tasty treats from 4pm to 6pm Friday September 13th. And of course there will be wine -- a complimentary tasting in Pierce's Store and wine by the glass for the sale in the Garage. I'm very excited about a new wine label which features some superb French wine at very reasonable prices. Their secret is to find the small cooperatives and the out-of-the-way places that the French themselves would favor for their daily wine.

We'll sample a white Bordeaux and a red Bordeaux, both priced at a very affordable $11.99. Here's what Eric Asimov of the NY Times has to say about the red: "This bottle is precisely the sort of wine you imagine the locals drinking... It's supple, dry, fresh, mildly tannic, humble and direct."

We'll also expand our horizons with a delightful white from Côtes de Gascogne ($9.99) and a graceful red from Valençay ($15.99). A refreshing Tempranillo from Castilla in Spain ($9.99), will complete the offering.

So please plan to join us on Friday for a convivial, delectable event.
