Free Wheelin' is the Mad River Valley's Answer to the Transportation Needs of Our Seniors & Locals Without Wheels.
Thanks to the cooperative efforts of the Mad River Seniors, MRV Community Fund and MRV Interfaith Council, Free Wheelin' started in June 2019 as a pilot program to provide free transportation to valley senior citizens and others who have no transportation. Thanks to the cooperative efforts of the Mad River Seniors, MRV Community Fund and MRV Interfaith Council, Free Wheelin' started in June 2019 as a pilot program to provide free transportation to valley senior citizens and others who have no transportation. The program has been so successful that funding has been extended each year, currently until June 1, 2023.
As of January 2023, Free Wheelin’:
• Has a client list of over 210 valley residents
• Has given over 3,000 free rides, currently averaging 100 rides per month
• Has driven over 90,000 miles
• Owns a 2019 Subaru Forester
• Gives mileage reimbursement to drivers who use their own vehicles to provide rides (thanks to a generous grant by Lawson’s Finest and other donations from the Rotary Club, Village Grocery, and riders)
Seniors of the Valley have come to depend on us for getting them to and from medical appointments, social gatherings, grocery stores, the post office, beauty salon, and more. We are proud to be able to support our seniors with this critical and free transportation service, as well as offering rides to non-senior Valley residents who don't have transportation.
