Abortion Discussion: Should Abortion Be Legal?

Abortion Discussion: Should Abortion Be Legal?
Brattleboro, VT
Kurt
Oct 31, 2022

NOT the usual "debate", but a public discussion by people around Brattleboro who believe in public discourse.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, BOYS AND GIRLS OF ALL AGES, you will soon witness an electrifying display of daring and resolve as our heroic orators endure each others' contradictions and risk criticism and ignominy in the public eye while relying for their protection solely on the mutual respect and dignity of their impassioned rivals

BCS will be producing a series of discussions on topical issues. For our part the purpose of the series is civil discussion itself. This event will not be a debate like the familiar candidate debate or game show. Speakers will not take turns answering questions from a moderator. It will be a public discussion of abortion and Proposition 22, and the question: Should Abortion Be Legal? We expect the public will witness their neighbors earnestly disagreeing on a moral issue. This is tantamount for the event and the series.

Lilac Bush Being Evicted Without Cause

Lilac Bush Being Evicted Without Cause
Brattleboro, VT
Kurt
Oct 11, 2022

Lily, a tall thin lilac bush, is being evicted from her home where she has lived for sixty-four years. She's OK with it, though. The landlord, BCS, is making room for emergency housing in RVs for homeless people and other people during the housing crisis . You can help by giving this bush a home.

Brattleboro Common Sense (BCS) is up front with emergency policies during the housing crisis. Our EHRV plan can create substandard emergency housing in RVs in a matter of days. Rent controls will allow fair increases in monthly rents. Fair eviction policy will prevent evictions without cause and require landlords to renew leases to tenants that have followed their lease agreements.

In November BCS will launch a petition for a charter amendment in Brattleboro. Rights And Democracy (RAD) will launch petitions in several municipalities across the state.

We proposed fair eviction and rent controls two years ago, but town government, like other governments, does not really understand the emergency and is fixated on new construction, which takes more than a year. We know three mothers that are living in their cars with their kids. One will be evicted Friday. People need houses NOW. There are many ways to help.

We create legal ways for people to address global issues locally. Instead of protests and support groups, we use elections, negotiation and law. Our work has been reported regionally and around the world.
