The public is invited to take a once-ever packaged progressive drive-yourself tour of remarkable museums located within ten miles of the Lake Champlain Bridge on Saturday, September 17, 2016.
For $30 per ticket, historians will show guests the Daughters of the American Revolution’s “John Strong Mansion” museum and the museum exhibits inside at Chimney Point State Historic Site, both located in west Addison, Vermont. Next, the group will be given tours of the museum at Crown Point State Historic Site and inside the Penfield Homestead Museum – both of which are located in the town of Crown Point, New York. Last, there will be a tour of the Iron Center museum in Port Henry, NY operated by the Moriah Historical Society, and the sampler tour ends with a buffet lunch in a classic 89-year old diner, all included in the price of the tour ticket.
Our fast-paced day starts at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, September 17 when we gather at the D.A.R. John Strong Mansion on VT State route 17. This unique ticketed tour is sponsored by “Friends of Crown Point State Historic Site” and is a follow-up to last September’s “Five Formidable Forts” tour, organized by the same planners. Half-way through the tour, the Friends will provide a bottle of cold water and a bag of snacks for each participant. During the after-tour lunch, a game-style history museum quiz will be offered in the 1927 vintage diner at Port Henry. Maps and directions will be provided for each driver, so that tour goers can easily drive from museum to museum.
