The Selectboard is planning to put a Town Charter proposal in front of voters at the March 2014 Town Meeting. Wait a minute, didn't we already vote on this? Yes. At Town Meeting in March 2012, voters rejected a Town Charter proposal by a vote of 253 in favor to 262 opposed. Greater accountability for Town officials was the focus of the Town Charter. Major elements included changing some elected positions to appointed positions, and creating a voter recall provision for all elected provisions. The Selectboard feels these are still necessary changes that would address accountability and improve the Town's ability to fill important positions.
We'd like to hear from YOU. Please join us for a special meeting to discuss this on October 17 at 7pm at the Westford School. We are using the previous charter proposal as a starting point, and are interested in hearing your suggestions on how it could be revised and improved. The previous charter will be posted on the Town website shortly (http://www.westfordvt.us), and hard copies will also be available at the Town Office. Can't make the meeting? Feel free to send your thoughts to the Selectboard via email at selectboard@westfordvt.us. Also, feel free to attend and speak up at any regular Selectboard meeting. We have time set aside for public comments at every meeting. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month at 7pm at the Town Office.
PS - As a new Selectboard member this year, I was initially hesitant to bring this back to the voters. However, it only took me a few months of direct involvement with Town oversight to realize that our community would benefit from the charter provisions. It certainly bears more conversation. Please be a part of that!
