Huge amounts of Bakken crude oil are transported by rail along Lake Champlain and the Hudson River to the Port of Albany. The railroad cars used are not designed for hazardous materials. Towns, fragile environmental areas, water supplies and people all along the route are vulnerable. The oil is explosive at low temperatures and almost impossible to clean up when spilled. The number of derailments and explosions is increasing, including the cataclysmic destruction of the village of Lac Megantic, Quebec, a few years ago.
