Gamelan Sulukala is pleased to announce a public performance at the Plainfield, VT Opera House on US Rt. 2 in Plainfield on Sunday, May 1st at 4:00 pm.
A Javanese Gamelan is a group - or orchestra - of about 30 instruments ranging from huge gongs to tiny flutes with lots of xylophone and kettle type instruments in between. Gamelan has a long history in central Vermont, going back to the late 1960’s when Dennis Murphy built the first gamelan anywhere in the world outside of Java at Goddard College. Gamelan Sulukala was made for Goddard College in Java and is a full complement of instruments fashioned from bronze and iron.
This concert will feature a wide variety of music ranging from traditional Javanese and Balinese pieces, to contemporary compositions written by Murphy, a much revered and multi-talented composer considered to be a “father of American gamelan”, and gamelan legend Barbara Benary.
If you are familiar with gamelan, don’t miss this rare concert. If you’re new to gamelan music you are in for a treat! Admission is by donation.
