The United Church of Craftsbury is pleased to welcome Imam Islam Hassan. Islam Hassan is the Imam – the spiritual leader - of the mosque that is part of the Islamic Society of Vermont, based in Colchester. Imam Islam will present a talk on Islam, and discussion time will follow. His presentation will focus on the Five Pillars of Islam; the common heritage of Islam and Christianity, faiths that, with Judaism, share a common spiritual tradition; and common misunderstandings about the Muslim faith.
Imam Islam Hassan was born and raised in Egypt, and memorized the whole Quran by the age of twelve. Since childhood, he has studied Islam independently with some of the most prominent Muslim scholars in the Muslim world. He earned a license to teach The Quran and The Hadith, and a bachelor and a Master’s degree in sharia’a and Islamic studies. In the U.S., Imam Islam has taught at Islamic schools, and led the congregational services at six mosques in four states, and has served as the imam of the Islamic Society of Vermont since 2010.
“As a Christian church, we have an interest in deepening our understanding of Islam, one of the three Abrahamic religions. We hold deep respect for all enduring faith traditions, and feel called to learn more about other religions that spring from the same ancient roots,” said Rev.Alan Parker, pastor of the United Church of Craftsbury.
The presentation is free and everyone is welcome. The program follows the monthly free Community Dinner at the church in Craftsbury, to which everyone is also welcome.
