Washington Central Supervisory Union Act 46
Study Committee Update
Recap: Under Act 46, approved by the legislature in 2015, a Washington Central Supervisory Union study committee (composed of representatives from the five towns) is studying whether there is a form of school governance—school management—other than our current system of six separate school boards that would aid us in providing a better education for all our PreK-12 students at a sustainable cost. The study committee will produce either a specific recommendation or an update on its progress by June 30, 2016. Any recommendation will be voted on by the citizens of each of our five towns of Berlin, Calais, East Montpelier, Middlesex, and Worcester.
First we will like to remind you that each town is having small Mini Forums at their Board meetings during the month of March. We value your input! This is an opportunity for you to share your thoughts with us.
East Montpelier Mini Forum
March 21, 2016 at 7p.m. at East Montpelier Elementary School
This forum will provide an opportunity to each community to meet with its school board to talk about the future of our children as a whole. We will have a brief presentation of the information we have gathered so far, but most importantly, we will allocate most of the time to listen to your questions and have a conversation with you.
Full WCSU Community Forum
March 23, 2016—7pm at U-32 in the Cafeteria
This forum will provide community members from all five towns an opportunity to meet together with the full Act 46 Study Committee and the WCSU Board of Directors to discuss the status of this work and, to voice questions, comments, and suggestions and talk about the future of all our kids.
Highlights from the Committee’s meeting on March 9th:
• The principals of each of our elementary schools and our high School discussed how a simpler governance structure might better serve students while noting how they work together under the current structure.
• We met with representatives from the Montpelier, Twinfield, and Roxbury school districts each of which is interested in possible collaborations. We will continue these exchanges as we explore governance models that could work for our supervisory union.
