There are as many clowns as there are human beings.
There is one way to stand while there are infinite ways to fall.
Intelligence is limited. Stupidity is infinite.
Intro to Clowning
January 7th to March 31st
$15/class
Everyone has an inherent stupidity. Is that such a bad thing?
In clown, No!
The root meaning of the word 'stupid' comes from Latin, 'stupere', and means "to be amazed or stunned." In this process-oriented class on theatrical clowning, you will explore and excavate what is funny about you. No experience necessary. Come with an open heart, curiosity and a readiness to play.
"The art of clowning involves much more than the slapstick and oversized shoes of the traditional circus clown. The character of the Fool is an essential ingredient of human society - a universal archetype found in some form in all cultures and in all times." ~Jan Henderson
**Intro to Clown will be held in Brattleboro at The Cotton Mill (http://thecottonmill.org/map-directions/).
3rd floor ~ Mutsu Crispin Studio (A334). Look for the big red octopus over the door.
The first class is Thursday, January 7th from 6:00 to 7:30pm
**Please wear comfortable clothes that allow you freedom of movement. Since we will be doing movement analysis during our time together, it is important to wear neutral colors. Black clothes without logos, designs, other colors, etc. is best because it will respect the movement the most. Gray is second choice.
**Bring a water bottle
Homework....whaaaat? Yup...some homework. Don’t worry it won’t be daunting.
~Watch this TEDtalk on Vulnerability (it is only 20 minutes). Perhaps you have already listened to it, but even so, it’s good to absorb it again. In my opinion this has everything to do with Clown...and Life. http://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_on_vulnerability.html
My approach to Clown is process-based and heavily influenced by my trainings with Italian Maestro, Giovanni Fusetti. The work will be the discovery of your own unique clown. It will be a colorful journey filled with beauty, terror, laughter, emotion and vulnerability. And fun! Let’s not forget fun! My job and commitment to you is to provide a safe and nurturing environment where there is freedom to risk with daring honesty. I will do my best to coax that clown out of you. In return, I ask that you commit to the group and to the work.
Clown is a beautiful, poetic, and challenging art form. In order to honor the sacred space we create together, I ask that we keep the specifics of what happens in class to ourselves. In this way we will build and nourish our trust together. We will celebrate and learn from all of our successes, flops, and “infinite falls!”
I look forward to meeting you!

“Clown is a space of vulnerability and personal power; of rigorous fun and courageous openness. Clown is about learning to fall and how to have fun while falling.”
