Preview of Dec. 7 City Council Meeting and More

Past event
Dec 7, 2015, 7 to 9:30 PM

Dear Neighbors,

Before I get to the Council meeting preview, I’d like to mention a few items.

Rapid Flashing Beacons at the Rotary. There is good news on the installation of these pedestrian light signals. The site work is complete and the new RRFB equipment will be installed by the DPW traffic department over a one to two day period. Installation may happen as soon as tomorrow, Friday December 4th, but will likely be on the week of December 7th or December 14th. The DPW traffic department schedule can be variable because urgent traffic signal repair work is a priority. By the middle of the month, these flashing beacons should be installed. Please be alert to the installation work.

Pay by Credit Card is Live Downtown. You can now pay for parking by credit card in the Downtown. The app is called ParkMobile and you can download it for free on your phone. There is a quick tutorial to get you started. On each meter downtown, there is a four digit code on a green label. Please make a note of it when you park. This way if you are in a store or eating downtown, you can pay remotely by phone and not have to interrupt what you are doing to run back to your car.

For both of these projects, our thanks to the staff of dedicated staff at DPW for increasing our traffic and parking technology.

Now, on to the Council meeting preview…

On Monday, the City Council will hold the first of two meetings for the month of December.

The Council will begin its evening at 7pm with two presentations. The first is from the UVM Student Government Leadership and the second is firm Director of Public Works, Chapin Spencer on the Champlain Parkway. We will then receive a communication from the Mayor on the Diversity and Equity Strategic Plan. We have two indoor entertainment permits to vote on. The first is a one day permit at Body Resolution and the second is a one day permit at Zero Gravity. Both businesses are on Pine Street.

Our next item of business is the second reading of an ordinance regarding smoking in City parks. We have three resolutions on our agenda. The first is regarding clean up and other improvements at the Tower in Ethan Allen Park. The second is a resolution that proposes removing party designations on municipal ballot elections. The resolution would refer this proposal to the Charter Change Committee for its consideration and drafting of language that would come back to the Council for additional discussion. Removing party designations is a change to our City Charter and would require voter approval. The last resolution proposes to change the timing and publication of the City’s audit. This resolution is not online yet and still being worked on. It should be available over the weekend.

Our last items on our agenda are Council committee reports, comments from Councilors and the Mayor.

As with all Council meetings, please keep in mind that you are always welcome to come and speak to the Council on any subject you wish during our Public Forum which begins at 7:30pm. Clickable agenda items can be found on the City's website: https://www.boarddocs.com/vt/burlingtonvt/Board.nsf/Public All Council meetings are televised live on BT Channel 317 and streamed live to your computer or phone.

As always, I welcome your questions and concerns. Please be in touch over the weekend and on Monday.

I hope you all enjoy a terrific weekend.

My best,
Karen
