Stop the Pipeline

Sat. Oct. 24 in Montpelier

You may have noticed trucks and equipment on Rte. 2 in the old driving range, and also across from the Fire Dept. This is the staging area and beginnings of work on the Vt Gas Addison Natural Gas Project. The project is to lay down pipes from Colchester to Middlebury to bring fracked gas from Alberta, Canada to towns in Addison County.

You may have also noticed that there’s opposition to this pipeline by climate change activists.

Like me, you may have been wondering which side of this issue you’re on. Especially if you’re a natural gas customer like I am. And is it important enough to take a stand on?

I did some research, talked to some people, and spent some time thinking about it.

I decided the right thing is to oppose it, and to speak up about it. I’m going to this:

Mass Action to Stop the Pipeline
Saturday, October 24th, 11:00 AM
Statehouse Lawn, Montpelier, VT
______________

Here’s my thinking:

IT'S INVESTING IN AN OBSOLETE (hopefully) ENERGY SYSTEM
We’re supposed to be charting a course towards renewables. The VT State Comprehensive Energy Plan, being updated now, calls for 90% renewable energy by 2050. This proposed non-renewable fossil fuel project has a price tag of $154 million. They build these things to last, but hopefully the pipes will be phased out before they wear out.

FRACKED GAS EXTRACTION PROCESS IS DIRTY, POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS AND USES TONS OF WATER
(http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-14432401)
I know, I know, I’m a natural gas customer, benefitting from fracked gas. I wish we were solar panel customers, but we’re not there yet. It might not be so far off… (http://www.nationalgeographic.com/climate-change/special-issue/)

THE CHALLENGE OF CLIMATE CHANGE IS DAUNTING
“The safe level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is 350 parts per million. This March, global levels of CO2 passed 400 parts per million for the first time since record keeping began.” (http://400.350.org)

It’s such a huge problem — how do we start to address it?

WE HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE
Saddling our grandchildren with the national debt is child’s play compared to a too-hot planet. We are now experiencing our heated up atmosphere causing sluggish weather systems that do more damage, whether it’s drought or flooding. 450 parts of Carbon Dioxide per million may be the tipping point for our planet.

Let’s STEP AWAY FROM THE Addison Natural Gas Project PIPELINE

I hope you will join me in opposing this project and taking one step towards being part of the climate change solution.
