Giant Chutes and Ladders Game Board Comes to Montpelier!

Affordable, high-quality early learning opportunities move our children and our country forward!

The Vermont Early Childhood Alliance, Mama Says, Building Bright Futures, and MomsRising.org are bringing parents, children, caregivers, and legislators together to play a life-size version of Chutes & Ladders on Saturday, October 5th from 10am-noon on the State House lawn in order to highlight the many ways high-quality child care and preschool moves children and our economy forward. To help visualize the critical importance of early learning, MomsRising is working with local organizations across the country to host similar events, delivering a common message that giving kids a good start in life is not a game!

The board features statistics illustrating the importance of high-quality, affordable early learning programs. The Ladders in the game show statistics on how quality early learning and preschool helps kids successfully move forward in life. The Chutes demonstrate how children fall behind if they lack proper support before kindergarten.

Their first five years are when children build the social and emotional skills needed to succeed in school. Children who attend high-quality prekindergarten perform better on language and literacy, as well as math and science achievement tests in school. Unfortunately, many children do not have access to affordable, quality early care and education during the critical years when their brain architecture is being wired for later life.

On October 5th, VT children and their families, caregivers, and policymakers are invited to play a 16 x 16 foot Chutes & Ladders-style game on the VT State House lawn.

Madeleine Kunin, former Vermont Governor and author of The New Feminist Agenda, will speak at 10:30 am about the importance of quality early experiences and what we can do to ensure all of Vermont’s children get what they need for healthy development.

Local organizations focusing on early childhood will provide information on family resources and services.

Snacks, live music, and kids’ activities will be available on the sidelines.

Come fill our our survey and decorate a paper doll to show your support for Governor Shumlin's Early Childhood Framework, Vermont's Child Care Financial Assistance Program, and Publicly Funded PreK.
