At Monday evening's Selectboard meeting, a public hearing for the proposed Firearm Discharge Ordinance is scheduled for 7pm.
This ordinance was orginally drafted to help eradicate haphazard, unsafe shooting into the Town Forest. We (at Town Hall) have received a number of complaints from neighbors near the Town Forest of rounds being fired from cars into the Town Forest. Clearly, these folks shooting into the Town Forest were not using proper gun safety or proper hunting practices. This creates a significant safety problem for homeowners near the Town Forest.
Furthermore, the recently adopted Town Forest Management Plan allowed for hunting in the Town Forest but prohibited careless shooting practices in the Town Forest; however without an ordinance this part of the forest management plan is unenforceable. The proposed ordinance will give our police department a necessary tool to help residents around the Town Forest stay safe and stamp out this behavior.
This ordinance also prohibits all shooting in Geprags Park - a practice already in place.
Hunting will still be allowed in the Town Forest, and hunting and recreational shooting will still be legal on other public and private lands (unless posted).
