About the Winter Sports Program (WSP):
The Winter Sports Program (WSP) consists of a 6-week learn to ski or snowboard package for the first through sixth graders, inclusive of lift tickets and rentals, at the Killington/Pico Resort for a cost of $60 per student. We recognize that, even with this reduced rate, some families will not be able to afford this program. We want to make this program available to all students regardless of their financial situation. Last year one third of our students required financial assistance and would not have otherwise been able to participate in this amazing opportunity. Most of the children had never been to a ski resort and went from falling on the bunny hill to riding up the lift and skiing & riding down the mountain. They really enjoyed learning a new outdoor winter sport and it was amazing to see their confidence build throughout the season. Research suggests that the rate of childhood obesity increases as income decreases. Many low income families do not have access to extracurricular sports, which puts these children at greater risk of a sedentary life style and long-term health issues such as childhood diabetes. Wallingford Elementary School wants to promote a healthy lifestyle and a love of the outdoors and give every child the opportunity to try outdoor winter sports regardless of their economic situation. To meet this community need, as well as to expose our children to the amazing winter resources available to us in Vermont, Wallingford Elementary School created the Wallingford Winter Sports Program in 2014.
