For nearly two decades the resonant acoustics of the Old West Church have been home to an annual folk concert in a timeless, remarkable setting. I'm not shy to say my daughter is one of those singing this Sunday, August 16 at 4:00 pm. The event will mark the 17th Annual Calais Folk Concert, begun as a fundraiser for the Vermont Folklife Center. Entitled “Heirloom,” the concert this year will showcase Vermont performers passing the music on to the next generation. Franco American Folk singer Michèle Choinière performs with her eight-year-old daughter Isabella, concert founder Deb Flanders sings with her niece Esther Nemethy, Fiddler David Gusakov performs with his son Nate who plays banjo and Pete Sutherland performs with his protégé fiddler Oliver Scanlon. Musicians from the Vermont Symphony Orchestra - cellist John Dunlop and violinist/fiddler Laura Markowitz - will also join the concert for an afternoon of memorable music making. It's a wonderful setting with a sun-setting dusk finale.
(The 17th Annual Calais Concert is featured in Vermont Arts 2015, a year-long celebration highlighting arts events, concerts, festivals, exhibits and openings occurring all across the state by the Vermont Arts Council.) General admission at the door is $15.
