As we near the one month anniversary of the first earthquake in Nepal, Vermonters have raised more that $60,000 to support efforts to assist people from Nepal affected by the disaster. The community-led organization Vermont for Nepal first directed funds to the International Red Cross organization with a plan to identify and support local organizations that may, more directly, assist victims and family members in Nepal. Vermont for Nepal has identified two organizations:
1) Maya Universe Academy is the first free Private Boarding school in the Nepal countryside. Their girl's residence was destroyed during the earthquake and they must now rebuild to create a safe space for the children. Following the earthquake, Maya Universe Academy's mission is to shelter and care for children from the Gorkha district are who have lost their families, experienced the trauma of the earthquake, and are at risk of illness in their home communities. Funds donated to the Maya Universe Academy will help rebuild shelter and buy food, drinking water, and other supplies.
2) Youth For Blood is a youth-led, non-profit, service-driven circle of Nepali youth devoted to the welfare of society. It's mission is to encourage and inspire blood donation and to provide blood, free of charge, to those in need. Youth for Blood has donated food, tents, and other supplies to victims in the Nuwakot, Kavre, and Sindhupalchok regions, and in the near future they plan to focus their efforts on one area to build a school, a hospital, and houses.
Please join fellow Vermonters in the earthquake relief efforts. You may donate funds to Vermont for Nepal. Thanks to the generous support of the Peace and Justice Center, checks written out to Vermont for Nepal/PJC, can directly support these organizations. Please send your check to:
