Grand Isle Schools will welcome two teachers from Hawassa, Ethiopia, in early May as part of The Vermont Ethiopia Teacher Exchange. Tedelech Assefa from Kokeb Niget Elementary and Adane Kebebew from Tabor High School will visit Grand Isle County schools May 1-5.
The Vermont Ethiopia Teacher Exchange – now in its second year – is a program that enables Vermont and Ethiopian high school and elementary school teachers to visit each other’s schools in alternate years, sharing their nation’s culture with students and comparing teachers’ lives and practices in both countries.
The community is invited to meet the visiting teachers at a potluck dinner at Folsom School on Monday, May 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. Please bring a dish to share. Beverages will be provided.
The teachers will spend time in all five Islands schools, speaking with students about Ethiopia and learning more about the school day in Vermont.
Another opportunity to enjoy learning more about Ethiopian food and dance is a benefit dinner on Saturday, May 2, at Burnham Hall in Lincoln. The Willowell Foundation and Vermont Folklife Center are holding the benefit to support the Vermont Ethiopia Teacher Exchange. It will feature Ethiopian Dance Boogie Music by the New Nile Orchestra and authentic Ethiopian cuisine. The cost is $15 for adults, $7 for students or $40 for families. Children under 5 are free. The event takes place from 7-10:30 p.m. at Burnham Hall, 52 East River St., Lincoln. For information, call 453-6195.
The Vermont Ethiopia Teacher Exchange was made available to the Islands through Elaine Pentaleri, curriculum coordinator for the Grand Isle Supervisory Union. The Willowell Foundation, Folklife Center, and Castleton College sponsor the exchange
