March 1, 2015 For Immediate Release
The Franklin / Grand Isle Superior Court Family Division are appealing to local residents to serve as Guardians ad Litem (GALs) for children and teens involved in the court system.
Under Vermont law, childrens’ interests are protected by volunteer Guardians ad Litems; advocates who help abused and neglected children and those accused of crimes navigate the system to get the resources and support they need. The GALs are appointed during the first hearing in Family Court and remain an active part of a child’s team until the case is resolved. A GAL’s role is to provide information to the Judge about the best strategies to aid each child in achieving safety and permanency. The GAL participates in all educational and treatment meetings, attends all court hearings, and meets regularly with the child or teen to gain perspective on what is in the child’s best interest.
If you are interested in learning more about this vital role, please feel free to attend the open house or contact Susanne Schmidt at Susanne.schmidt@state.vt.us for more information.
The event will include a short presentation, and an opportunity to speak with a current GAL and a brief video presentation
