Ice on Lake Champlain: One of the Early Settlers Greatest Assets

On March 6 at 7PM the South Hero Historical Society will present a program on ice harvesting--something so important for refrigeration before electricity and modern refrigerators arrived on the islands.

A panel consisting of Rod Larrow, Malcolm Allen, Bud Lawrence, and Ray Allen will discuss their early memories of the ice harvesting process. They have stories to tell about the process itself and the hard work involved, of camps and houses that had their own ice houses, etc. If there is time, they might include other uses of the ice for transportation and recreation.

Everyone is welcome to come join us in this interesting discussion. Harvesting tools will be on display, as well. Perhaps you have some stories and pictures of your own to share with us!

Our meetings are held at 7 p.m. in the Folsom School on South Street. If you prefer not to climb the stairs, enter the building from the original front door in the brick half of the building.

See you there!
