Hello citizens and voters. We once again approach an opportunity to exercise the right to cast a ballot. Town Meeting Day this year is Tuesday March 3. In Ward 3 the polls are open 7am- 7pm at the Sustainability Academy at Lawrence Barnes School on North St.
~The last day to REGISTER to vote is Wednesday February 25 at 4pm at City Hall.
~The last day to vote in person at City Hall -via ABSENTEE ballot- is Monday March 2 at 4pm.
~The last day to vote using the mail -via ABSENTEE ballot- is more complicated. If relying on the US Mail to deliver your ballot to City Hall, you should place it in the mail by Saturday, February 28. Monday March 2 might work but Saturday is safer.
~Also, if you are requesting an ABSENTEE ballot via mail, the best way is to call the Burlington City Clerk's office at 802-865-7000- by Tuesday February 24 or Wednesday at the latest. That leaves enough time for the Clerk to mail out a ballot and time for it to be back in the mail to City Hall by Saturday February 28.
Voter turnout in Ward 3 has been increasing in recent years. For many years, Ward 3 had regularly finished in 5th or 6th place in the race for total ballots among the 7 wards. I am happy to report that Ward 3 has moved up to a regular 4th or 5th place.
I like to think that the present staff of election workers is partially responsible for the improvement. We have made many changes which has made the polling place more inviting and comfortable. We work more closely with the school officials and the PTO bake sale volunteers. We make side checkers and the people outside the polls soliciting support for their causes feel welcome. We set up many extra chairs and tables for voters and their children to sit and visit with their neighbors and polling staff.
