Light & Variable: Woodwind Music to Defy February - Feb. 21

Past event
Feb 21, 2015, 4 to 5:30 PM

If February didn’t exist, who would dare to invent it? But since it does, Friends of Music at Guilford (FOMAG) has chosen that unloved month to present the woodwind quintet Variable Winds in a program designed to take your mind off it. The concert is at 4:00 p.m. this Saturday, February 21, at Guilford Community Church. The quintet includes performers on flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon, all residents of Southern Vermont or the Pioneer Valley in Massachusetts, who play with a number of orchestras and other ensembles in the region. Their program includes arrangements of three tuneful, witty, and charming songs about music by Gustav Mahler; Irving Fine's "Partita," one of the finest pieces in the woodwind quintet repertory; Claude Arrieu's lively "Suite en quatre," thoroughly French in character -- imagine the streets, salons and music halls of Paris (ironically, the French horn is the one missing instrument); and three songs by American tunesmith Alec Wilder, whose works were championed by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday (the arranger has replaced the oboe with its big sister, the English horn, for a richer, gentler sound). Guilford Community Church is at 38 Church Dr. in the Algiers village of Guilford, Vt., just over a mile from Exit 1 off I-91. A hearty teatime reception follows. Admission at the door is $10/person. For further information, contact the FOMAG office at 802-254-3600 or office@fomag.org.
