Bat Walks!

Explore the Endangered Bat Habitat Management Project with Don Mitchell, whose recently published book about the work is now available.
Each Saturday morning throughout the fall of 2013, Don will be offering guided tours of the enhanced bat habitat zones in the woods of Treleven Farm to any and all comers. Hikers need to arrive at Don and Cheryl’s house by ten o’clock in the morning. (For a map, click DIRECTIONS on the menu bar.)

The full tour takes about 90 minutes, and includes a trip up the back cliff that offers spectacular views of the Champlain Valley. Dress for the weather, and—if you like—bring a light backpack to carry water, snacks, bug dope, binoculars, etc.

These weekly hikes began taking place on August 3, and they’ll continue until November 2. If Don has to be away on a particular Saturday morning, Cheryl or Ethan—or someone else who’s familiar with “the bat project” here—will be on hand to guide visitors through the woods.

After each Saturday’s hike, we’ll have light refreshments at the farm pond and Don will show off copies of his new book FLYING BLIND: One Man’s Adventures Battling Buckthorn, Making Peace with Authority, and Creating a Home for Endangered Bats. The book, just published by Chelsea Green, tells the story of the bat project at Treleven and also serves as an eco-memoir.

Please spread this invitation far and wide! We love showing off our efforts to shape the woods here in ways that we hope will benefit endangered bat species.
