Canfield Gallery Hosts Minerals and Mining in Vermont Exhibit
The Canfield Gallery, located at the Martha Canfield Library in Arlington will host an exhibit, Minerals and Mining in Vermont from Jan. 15 – Feb. 15, 2025. Bill Cotrofeld, local gem and mineral hobbyist will give a talk on Sat. Jan. 18th from 2:00-3:00pm in the meeting room of the library. The exhibit and talk are free and open to the public.
Bill became interested in collecting minerals while in 8th grade, along with two friends, who called themselves the "Junior Geologists of Albany". They spent many hours at the local library borrowing books on minerals, and at the New York State Museum to see their huge mineral collection. In 1956, Bill and his friends attended the organizational meetings at the N.Y. State Museum to help form the Capital District Mineral Club, of which he is a past president and current secretary. In 2014, Bill decided to see if there was interest in forming a club in Southern Vermont. Surprisingly, over 40 people attended the meeting at the Martha Canfield Library and the Southwestern Vermont Mineral & Gem Club, Inc. was formed as a non-profit educational organization. Bill also heads up the Southern Vermont Mineral, Rock and Gem Show each May at Grace Christian School in Bennington. Bill and helpers have recently reorganized and cataloged the magnificent mineral collection at the Georgi Museum in Shushan, N.Y. Bill enjoys talking about minerals, their uses, and collecting to a variety of groups including school classes in Southern Vermont and New York.
Please join us at the Canfield Library to view his exhibit and learn about Bill's passion. The exhibit will be open during regular library hours beginning January 15th, with Bill's talk scheduled for 2:00pm on Sat. Jan. 18th.
