The Hardwick Equity Committee and Jeudevine Memorial Library invite you to commemorate MLK Day as a community with this gathering at the library on SUNDAY, January 19.
We'll show the Academy Award-nominated film "SELMA" from 1:00-3:00 pm, followed by a discussion from 3:00-4:00 pm. You're welcome to view the film on your own (Netflix, Hulu, Prime, other streaming services) and just come for the discussion (or even if you don't manage to watch the film). We'll have light refreshments.
In addition to recognizing the contributions of Dr. King and the larger civil rights movement, MLK Day is regarded as a NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE, inspired by King's view that everyone can serve and make a difference in their community. Coordinating with local groups, there will be VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES to sign up for at days and times that work for you.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day Act was signed into law in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan, establishing MLK Day as a federal holiday in the United States.
