Loss is a part of our everyday lives and part of the struggle of being human. As individuals educating and mentoring children, we can all benefit from learning about the process of grieving. This workshop will explore the developmental, familial, and spiritual dimensions of the grief process in children, adolescents, & families. The different types of losses youth experience will be discussed, with a particular focus on the death of a loved one or loss of a relationship. Unique characteristics of the grieving process for youth who have experienced trauma will be explored. Didactic instruction, case discussion, artwork and writing will be used to illustrate the essential aspects of the grief process. Ways to support grieving youth and creative coping strategies for the various types of losses youth experience will be presented.
