The Aurora Chamber Singers is pleased to present its fall concert, "Wake Every Breath," on Saturday, November 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the College Street Congregational Church, 265 College Street, in Burlington Vermont. The program features sacred choral music by three composers- Johan Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and William Billings–all with very different world views.
Bach, a devoted Lutheran, wrote his cantata Nun Comm, Der Heiden Heiland, to be performed on the first Sunday of Advent and it was first performed in Weimar in 1714.
The Mozart Missa Brevis was composed when he was 18 years old. His personal style was already developed, but this graceful and joyous work has lots of syncopation and surprising melodies.
William Billings (1746-1800, born and died in Boston) was self-taught and the first American choral composer. Noted for his strong rhythmic vitality and straightforward harmonies, his compositions reflected both his faith and his commitment to the American Revolution.
We look forward to sharing this glorious music with you!!
