Cornelius Krieghoff 1815-1872 - Chronicler and artist of Lower Canada

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then Cornelius Kreighoff has left us a full and rich encyclopedia of 19th century colonial life. This is just as well since very little is known of his personal life. A keen observer, Kreighoff chronicled the vicissitudes and pleasures of daily life in Lower Canada of the mid-19th century. His paintings transport us into a time long past and admits us into the very heart of domestic intimacies in both Habitant and Indian families.
