We at the Vermont Historical Society want to invite you to the grand opening of our new Research and Exhibition Gallery at the Vermont History Center in Barre! We'll be hosting a grand opening on October 1st at 4pm: there'll be some speakers, performances by the choirs from Barre City Elementary/Middle and Spaulding High School, and a chance to check out the gallery space and the history center!
This is something that we've been working on for decades: when we moved to the Spaulding School and opened it in 2002, we had in our plans a gallery space to display some of the 30,000 items we have in our collection. Fast-forward to a couple of years ago and we finished it, and we've got everything placed on the shelves!
Most of our objects are stored in climate-controlled storage rooms in the history center and are generally out of sight, except for exhibits or research purposes. This gallery is called "open storage" and it's a way for us to store objects in themed cases that allows folks to check them out. It's really cool: I can spend hours in this room pulling out drawers and looking at the items. There's around 1,500 on display right now!
