What Does the First Amendment Ask of Us?

Windham World Affairs Council in partnership with Brooks Memorial Library, Vermont Independent Media/Voices Live! and The Commons will host the second America 250 Town Hall. The forum will ask citizens to consider the various arguments for and against an expanded reading of the First Amendment's free speech clause even in the face of potential violence.

During most of the 20th century, governments were able to prosecute any speakers,or protestors, who created a "clear and present danger." In 1969, the Supreme Court changed the rule. Only words that caused "imminent lawless action" could be supressed. The question for us now is: How can we reduce political violence without giving up on free speech?

Moderated by Meg Mott, PhD, 'Constitution Wrangler' and political scientist, the Town Hall takes place Wednesday, September 25, at 6:30 PM, at Brooks Memorial Library, Brattleboro, Vermont. As with the first Town Hall on the constitutional rights of the unhoused this Spring, all perspectives are welcome. The goal of the evening is not to endorse one viewpoint but to better understand them all. The event is free and open to the public.
