Celebrate a Bennington Unsung Hero This Saturday!

Sep 21, 2024, 9 to 10:30 AM

On Saturday, September 21 at 9:00 am, the Walloomsac River and Downtown Walk will highlight both an individual and an organization who are working on behalf of the community. The walk will include a presentation of the Bennington Unsung Hero Award, which recognizes individuals who have quietly gone above and beyond on behalf of our community.

Charles Dewey will receive this month's award. In particular, we celebrate his invaluable work with the Bennington Museum and the Bennington Old First Church and Cemetery.

Entering the Old First Church's Cemetery, one will see a number of beautiful signs created by Charles to guide visitors to historic graves including those of Robert Frost, Ethan Allen, and the first minister of old First Church, the Rev. Jedidiah Dewey. He has lovingly restored gravestones throughout the cemetery and has rebuilt portions of the beautiful white fence that surrounds the cemetery and connects to the Old First Church. Dewey also created a carriage for the model of a cannon used in the Battle of Bennington that is on display at the Bennington Museum. In addition, he has given years of service to the Planning Commission and the Old Bennington Cemetery Board. Please come and join us in celebrating Charles Dewey as a Bennington Unsung Hero.

At the conclusion of this month's walk, we will adjourn to the historic Old First Church where there will be refreshments. The church and cemetery will be open for visiting.

September's walk will begin at 9 AM at the Rotary/Bennington Station Park on Depot Street between Main Street and River Street. Walloomsac Walks take place on the third Saturday of each month. Please note that the walks begin at 9:00 a.m. from June through October and return to 10:00 a.m. from November through March.

The walks are pet-friendly, and people of all ages are invited to come out and enjoy this ongoing community event. As part of a collaboration between the Better Bennington Corporation (BBC) and the North Bennington Outdoor Sculpture Show (NBOSS), participants will be able to view several sculptures along the walk. In the case of inclement weather, cancellation notices will be placed on Front Porch Forum and the Bennington Blotter.
