The Monkton Museum & Historical Society is pleased to announce a presentation about Stephen Bates, the first Vermont black sheriff, who after fleeing slavery during the Civil War, served as the chief of police in Vergennes, VT from 1879 to 1907. This is a story about an important leader who was brought back to life through the efforts of his descendants and Jane Williamson of the Rokeby Museum and Alicia Grangent of the Vergennes Boys and Girls Club. They worked to restore Bates's legacy for the city of Vergennes. He is now immortalized by a Vermont sign beside the Vergennes Green and informative displays at the Bixby Library and the Vergennes Police Department. Come listen to the life of Stephen Bates and learn how his descendants and others brought him back to life through remembrance. We hope to see you there or via Zoom.
