The Friends of Missisquoi will again welcome Dr. Frederick Wiseman to continue exploration of the indigenous heritage of the Missisquoi NWR area. In this free online Zoom session, he will discuss one of the most culturally complex periods in Abenaki archaeology; that of the Woodland Period. It was a time that witnessed social complexity, the coming of life-changing technologies such as ceramics, the bow & arrow, and corn/bean/squash horticulture. It also saw the rise of armed conflict and large scale economic/cultural/political alliances and networks that have persisted into modern times. The archaeological record in the Missisquoi Delta region is particularly rich, from the remains of longhouses down to > tiny, carbonized pieces of crop seeds, shell, and bone. We will end with the arrival of Samuel de Champlain in 1609 to end the Prehistoric Period and introduce the Contact Period, the next chapter of the Abenaki story.
