Fern Maddie is a balladeer-songwriter based in Montpelier. Her songs, performed with claw hammer banjo, guitar, and clear, soulful vocals, explore themes of trauma, grief, and renewal. Fern's modern interpretations of traditional ballads have earned national and international acclaim: her debut album, Ghost Story, was named #2 of The Guardian's Best Folk Albums of 2022 and was listed on NPR's Best Roots Music of the year.
Fern's unique sound is the child of many influences: Old-Time string band music, the revivalist balladeers of the 60s and 70s, dark country, experimental folk-rock, and the modern trad renaissance(s). Her music has been compared to the work of June Tabor, Kate Rusby, Sharon Van Etten, Rhiannon Giddens, and Joni Mitchell.
The Cabot Folk Club is a monthly listening-room concert series that offers the best in Vermont's acoustic music and songwriting talent. Each set opens with a two song "floor spot" performance by each of the two local musicians featured for the evening. Also featured in this series are the delicious home-baked refreshments during the intermission, and the drawing of two raffle tickets--free ticket upon arrival-- drawn before the second set. Donations support improvements for the hall and this series.
