Past event
Feb 19, 2024, 7 to 8:30 PM

The Monkton Museum & Historical Society invites the larger community to join us at the Monkton Town Hall or via Zoom link on Monday, February 19th at 7:00 pm. In recognition of Black History Month, Gary Russell will discuss his experiences as a long time educator and coach at Mt. Abraham and South Burlington Middle Schools. He is an engaged citizen, involved parent, and proud Vermonter. He will share his story of connections, joys, and challenges as a person of color in Vermont. He will talk about acceptance and obstacles for himself, including his work to organize student and parent protests during the George Floyd summer of 2020 and changing the name of the South Burlington mascot from Rebels to Wolves. He will also discuss the life of his father, who was the first black police officer in the 1950s and a Civil Rights activist in Tucson, Arizona. He will also examine how educators, professionals, and regular citizens can combat racism and racist acts to positively impact our communities.
