"The Mystic Behind Martin Luther King, Jr." with Rev. Dr. Mellen Kennedy
How did Martin Luther King, Jr. become the courageous, articulate, powerful voice and presence for Civil Rights? That's a complicated question. One major influence on King was Howard Thurman, who taught at Howard University and also at Boston University when King was a grad student there. Thurman was a mystic, theologian, Christian, and powerful preacher. He travelled to India in 1936, met Gandhi, and brought back to America the message of non-violent resistance. Let's explore the profound effect that Thurman had on King as we celebrate this ML King weekend.
Music will be provided by the UCM choir singing a musical setting of Thurman's poem, The Work of Christmas; and Heather Moz with Lindsay Wade performing A Change is Gonna Come.
This and all other Worship Services are available on our YouTube Channel, @UnitarianChurchofMontpelier.
