The Worcester Range is the beating heart of one of the largest blocks of unfragmented, undeveloped forest land in the northern Green Mountains. Over the past century, the story of the worcester range has been one of resilience and rewilding. Tragically, the VT Agency of Natural Resources, which manages 19,000 acres of this special landscape, just released a draft management plan that would stump the Worcester Range's remarkable recovery.
Proposing 2000 acres of logging over the next 2 decades, and designating half of the state managed land open to timber harvest, including the slopes of Mt Hunger and much of Elmore State Park. The plan gives scant attention to climate and flooding impacts, and falls short in this monumental opportunity.
They will host public meetings on the following dates/times, to present a first draft of the management plan and engage with the public:
December 13, 6-8pm, Doty Elementary School, 24 Calais Road, Worcester, VT
December 19, 6-8pm, Stowe High School, 413 Barrows Road, Stowe, VT
Public comments will be accepted between December 13, 2023, and February 2, 2024, by email, mail, phone, through an online form, or in person at the public meetings. You do not need to attend a public meeting to submit a comment. More information about how to submit comments will be provided on our website on December 13th.
