October 2023 School Board Update
Greetings from your school board. At last Wednesday's meeting, we hosted our annual training on school budgeting as we begin the process for developing our plan for the 2024-25 school year. We learned that an initial projection for local education spending based on current staffing levels and expense trends is close to a 13% increase; unfortunately we will need to consider reductions in a variety of areas to bring that to a more sustainable level. On November 1 we will host a community forum focused on the next budget at Doty Elementary School in Worcester. This will be a particularly good opportunity to learn about next year's budget and share your perspective at an early stage in the process.
We also received the first student learning monitoring report of the year; math and literacy proficiency reports remain below where we would like to see them but a majority of our students are demonstrating solid annual growth and an impressive number are achieving "stretch growth". Our district has adopted an explicit goal to increase student proficiency rates for math while reducing the differences between certain groups of students over time; the board will continue to prioritize this effort in our planning, budgeting and monitoring.
The board performed a variety of typical administrative functions including approval of many of next year's capital expenditures. As always please feel free to contact any school board member (https://www.wcsu32.org/domain/145)
Don't forget!! November 1 we will host a community forum focused on the next budget at Doty Elementary School in Worcester.
Thank you for supporting our schools and please reach out if you have any questions.
Respectfully,
Amelia, Zach and Flor
