Heads up, Valley folks. Labor Day weekend is the time for the annual Green Mountain Stage Race, now in its 22nd year. More than 700 bicyclists will be participating, and there will be impacts on traffic. There will be just one road closure: Route 17 will be closed Sunday, Sept. 3 between 10:45am and 2:30pm between Mad River Glen on the east and Gore Road on the west. Otherwise all roads will remain open, but there might be slow going if you get behind the race. On Friday, September 1, between 8:00am and 2:30pm, riders will compete in an individual time trial on Brook and East Warren Road. Because racers will be riding one at a time, the impact on traffic should be minimal. On Saturday, September 2, racing will head north on Route 12A and south on Route 12 between 8:30am and 3:00pm. By traveling in the opposite direction of the race, you will encounter few delays. On Sunday, the race will be heading north from Mt. Ellen on Route 100 before turning west through Duxbury, between 8:00am and 11:00am, then head south on Route 116 before finishing at the top of App Gap from the west. It should be noted that riders who disobey Vermont state law while not racing -- e.g., by not riding to the right side of the road -- can be penalized, fined, and even disqualified from the race.
Race organizers appreciate your patience. Come out and cheer the riders on!
