There will be a transphobic event titled "Transgender care helpful or harmful?" held by Tara Ferf Jentink and Tonya Meacham with speaker Walt Heyers On Tuesday, June 20 from 5:45 PM - 8:30 PM in the Vergennes Union High School library. It is framed as a "parents' rights in education" event, but if you have been paying attention to national news surrounding the suppression of LGBTQ and racially comprehensive education in the US, you'll know that's a dog whistle used by transphobic hate groups and individuals to justify putting queer and trans kids in danger, forcing schools to out them to unsupportive families, and making public schools legally unable to provide a safe and affirming environment for trans youth. Oftentimes, supportive teachers and friends are all trans kids have, and if that is taken away, this risks the lives of some of our state's most vulnerable children. According to every major medical and psychiatric organization in the US, allowing trans kids to access gender-affirming care and supportive environments is suicide prevention. Myself, my friends, my community members will be showing up to protest this event, and I urge you to consider joining us if you can make it. If you can't make it, consider leaving the superintendent Sheilla Soule a message to let her know that this rhetoric puts her students in danger and has no place in our state- the number to call is 802-877-3332, and if you want to give the event's host Tara Ferf Jentink a call, her number is 503-880-4847. Thank you and I hope to see you there to protest and support trans kids if the event isn't cancelled.
