"1814: The Battle For Lake Champlain and its Archaeological Legacy" with Art Cohn
Wednesday, July 16 - 7pm, St. Albans Historical Society & Museum

American plans for the War of 1812 included gaining control of Lake Champlain and the Great Lakes from the British. To that end, Lieutenant Thomas Macdonough was charged with the organization of the US naval fleet on Lake Champlain. On September 11, 1814, the British and Americans met at Cumberland Bay, in what would become known as the Battle of Plattsburgh. Macdonough's victory was a significant moment in the War of 1812, just prior to the Treaty of Ghent. The consequences of that engagement - and the artifacts and objects it left behind - would have a lasting legacy on the field of nautical archeology and maritime history as well.

Art Cohn is a professional diver, as well as the co-founder and current Special Projects Advisor for the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Vergennes, VT.

LCMM's replica vessel Lois McClure will also be in St. Albans Bay on Wednesday, July 16 from 10am-5pm. Visitors can board the schooner to explore the 88-foot long boat “from stem to stern." For more information, or to learn more about the tour, please visit their website - www.lcmm.org/our_fleet/lois_mcclure_schedule.htm

Both events are free and open to the public.
