We are deep into winter but if you enjoy swimming, paddling, or rowing and keeping our NEK lake waters clean, here's an issue to watch.
The VT Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is considering the regulation of "wake boats" - a relatively new phenomenon in Vermont - whose big ballast tanks are filled with water, so that their hull sinks. This means that, even at low speeds, they produce waves that can be as much as four or five feet high, with a following wave chain intended for surfing. Needless to say, this creates a safety hazard for swimmers and many small boats and poses a significant shoreline erosion threat.
Time is running out for comments on a proposed state rule. There will be at a public meeting in Greensboro on Feb. 15 at 5:30 PM at the Highland Center. The advocacy group Responsible Wakes for Vermont Lakes has put together background information at: http://responsiblewakes.org including a link to which waterbodies in our area will be affected. Caspian is on the list.
