Social Studies teacher and Fulbright Recipient Sara Reed spent six months living in the UK interviewing experts on modern slavery. She talked to historians, politicians, activists, and ex-slaves themselves to create a curriculum for her Vermont high school students. Sara will share her work through Lamoille Valley Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Stowe Cinema 3Plex on Wednesday, February 5, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm.
Sara's talk will illustrate the story of historic slavery from its beginning with the invention of agriculture 8,000 years ago. She will then bring the story up to date with the form slavery takes today—descent-based slavery, debt bondage, contract slavery, forced labor, sex trafficking, child soldier use, and child marriage. Sara will describe factors that make people vulnerable to these conditions and examine a rising abolitionist movement.
A full series membership gives access to Osher Lifelong Learning events at all six sites statewide. To register for the full Lamoille series (eight presentations for $45) with your credit card, or for an individual presentation ($8), please go to http://learn.uvm.edu/olli/lamoille or call 802-656-8407 during regular business hours.
