Did you know that every year, a group of dedicated volunteers run free tax clinics at area senior centers, including East Montpelier, Montpelier, Barre, Northfield, Randolph, and Waterbury? Last year this group prepared over 500 tax returns. It can only happen because these folks give a day or two a week to help their fellow Vermonters meet their filing obligations.
Deep down, have you found that preparing your own tax return is sort of an interesting challenge? Have some time this winter to give a helping hand, meet lots of new people, keep your mind engaged, and learn about how the tax rules have changed? If so, you're invited to an information session about volunteering for the program on Friday, November 18 from 9 to 11 at the Montpelier Senior Activity Center, 58 Barre Street in Montpelier. Interested but can't make it? Leave a message with Twin Valley Senior Center, 223-3322, or the Montpelier Senior Activity Center at 223-2518, and one of us will call you back. The local clinics are part of a nationwide program sponsored by the AARP Charitable Foundation and the IRS to assist low and moderate income taxpayers, regardless of age; more information is available online at www.aarpfoundation.org/taxaide.
